The stunning village of Verteuil-sur-Charente

The stunning village of Verteuil-sur-Charente

Epic chateaux, breathtaking views, and river strolls, Verteuil-sur-Charente has it all!

The magnificent Verteuil-sur-Charente is only a 15-minute drive from the property. It has enviable views of one of the most stunning chateau in France and draws visitors from all over France.

The huge Chateau de Verteuil looms over the village with its breathtaking turrets and was originally built around 1080 as home to the Rochefoucauld family. It was largely destroyed by a fire during the French revolution and was rebuilt during the 19th century.

Although it’s unfortunately not open to the public, you can still appreciate its beauty from various vantage points around the village. Our favourite view is from the wonderful new bar, Le Sénéchalerie, which offers breathtaking views from its high vantage point.

The small but perfectly formed village is full of charm with several restaurants and bars, and a weekly Sunday market. It’s a firm favourite of everyone who visits.

The newly-opened La Sénéchalerie is an absolute joy! The bar and restaurant, perched on the hillside overlooking the chateau has been beautifully restored to the highest standards and you always receive a very warm welcome. During the summer there are plenty of tables and chairs on the terrace as well as in their gardens amongst the fruit trees. In the winter they have a roaring fire to keep you cosy in the beautiful bar. They have music at weekend all year round (either inside or out on the terrace) and it can get pretty lively! The food is great, and with notice, they can arrange for a vegan option.

Top tip – book in advance to get a table on the terrace and arrive early to see the chateau in all its glory before it gets dark!

Cosy meals in a stylish French bistro

Café Portebleu is a real favourite for anyone in the area and it is absolutely charming. The menu is wonderful with all the french classics you would expect including tarte tatin and crème brûlée! If you call or email ahead of time, the lovely owner and head chef is more than happy to make a 3-course vegan option. They always use the best local, seasonal produce and it’s delicious! It’s open all year round for lunch and dinner and it never disappoints.

A romantic dinner along the river bank

Another lovely restaurant in Verteuil-sur-Charente is Jeux de Pots, situated on the bank of the river, it couldn’t be more picturesque. The menu is seasonal and updated regularly. It has a brilliant reputation, especially for special occasions.

The small but plentiful market is open on Sunday mornings until 12pm. It has several fruit and vegetable sellers including our wonderful neighbour – Puy Bonnet, who sells the most fantastic organic produce along with his famous apple juice!

You can walk, kayak or paddleboard along the river in Verteuil. Kayaking past the incredible imposing chateau on a sunny afternoon is like nothing else! There are also lots of places to stop for a picnic and just relax and enjoy the surroundings.
